Public conference on the first year of scientific results by the powerful observatory on February 29, 2024, 6.00 pm

On February 29, 2024, at 6.00 pm, Prof. Roberto Maiolino, University of Cambridge (UK) will hold a public conference on the topic "The invisible Universe revealed by the James Webb Space Telescope" at the Department of Physics of the Sapienza University of Rome .

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the largest space telescope ever built. This phenomenal time machine is capable of photographing the first stars, the first black holes and the first galaxies that formed shortly after the Big Bang, as well as studying the atmospheres of extrasolar planets, searching for the ones that are most similar to our Earth. Roberto Maiolino, who is part of the team of scientists who has followed the project from the beginning, will talk about the complexity of this extraordinary telescope and reveal the mysteries that lie behind its images.

The conference is open to the general public and will be held in the Amaldi Hall, Marconi Building of the Department of Physics of the Sapienza University of Rome. It will be moderated by Dr. Massimo Stiavelli, who has led the JWST mission office at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, United States since 2012.

The event is organized in collaboration between the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Sapienza University of Rome. It is part of the public engagement programme of the workshop “Astrophysics: The James Webb Space Telescope. From first light to new visions of the world", which brings together researchers from all over the world at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences between 27 and 29 February, to discuss the first, revolutionary scientific results of the powerful space observatory.

The James Webb Space Telescope, launched on December 25, 2021, is an international collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.
