Brillouin and Neutrons: Assessing New Advances
Rome, 3-5 February 2016
The general subjects to be discussed during the three days are:
- THz excitations in disordered condensed matter and in biological and magnetic systems
- Neutron and photon inelastic scattering at low Q
- Simulation and Modelling
- Instrumentation Perspectives in Brillouin scattering
The First International Workshop on Neutron Brillouin Scattering, held in Perugia, Italy, in 2005, was organized to illustrate the wealth of information on the dynamical properties of disordered matter that was being provided by advanced scattering techniques, by computer simulations, and by theoretical methods. The workshop revealed a very active scientific community, and a broad range of topics already under study or yet to be tackled.
The denomination "Brillouin scattering" (BS), originally referred to visible light scattering, where the well-known Brillouin lines reflect the existence of propagating sound modes, has in the years been extended to include scattering of other probes able to span the kinematic plane at momentum transfers up to the nanometer range. Dedicated neutron BS instruments are now operational, and high-resolution beam lines of modern synchrotrons also provide facilities for x-ray and UV inelastic scattering.
