The Physics Department of Sapienza University of Rome established, in 2010, a series of invited lectures named after Giorgio Careri (1922-2008).

Professor of structure of matter for more than 30 years Careri gave a strong impulse to low-temperature physics and to biophysics. A brilliant independent mind he has been versed, until his very last days, in several subjects at the crossroad where physics, biology and the arts meet. The Giorgio Careri Memorial lecture is given, each year, by distinguished scholars active in the fields of interests cultivated by Careri, invited to present either comprehensive or sharply focused views on subjects of their own choice.

This year the twelfth Giorgio Careri Memorial Lecture will be given by:

Prof. FRANCESCO GONELLA,
Dipartimento di Scienze Molecolari e Nanosistemi
Università Cà Foscari, Venezia

Title: SCIENCE AND COMPLEXITY: THE TAO OF SYSTEMS THINKING

Abstract: People love to cite Einstein's famous quote, "The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking at which they were created", but quite rarely we are addressed what this new level of thinking should look like. In this lecture, I will talk about a comprehensive language able to face complexity in a range of diverse fields. Some of the keywords we will encounter during the lecture might be  Stock & Flow diagrams, Emergy (spelled with "m"), Cancer, Biology, Thermodynamics.
