2Day: Exploring Flatland

Students and colleagues are invited to participate in the 2Day workshop focused on the fascinating physical properties and enormous potentialities of two-dimensional (2D) materials.

Since the achievement of graphene (a single sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, Nobel prize in Physics in 2010), a widespread variety of 2D materials have been discovered and studied in the past decade. Such materials typically exhibit unique electronic, physico-chemical, optical, mechanical, magnetic, catalytical, and piezoeletrical properties. Furthermore, different 2D layers interact via weak van der Waals forces, that allows to vertically stack diverse 2D crystals in a virtually unlimited LEGO-like game.
This has widely enlarged the 2D materials' phase space, and introduced further degrees of freedom, such as the twist angle between successively stacked layers. The properties of 2D materials and 2D LEGOs can be engineered and have already revealed intriguing physical effects, with promising outcomes in the fields of optoelectronics, spintronics, photonics, quantum technologies, clean and renewable energies, and much more besides.
The workshop is meant to provide an overview of the most up-to-date and advanced progress on 2D materials and their heterostructures. To this end, prominent experts in the field will present the most recent achievements on a widespread of themes.
