In the modern scientific landscape, high-performance computing (HPC) has become a fundamental pillar for both cutting-edge research and the training of a new generation of students. Sophisticated computational infrastructure is essential for managing the complex data analysis and simulation pipelines required in frontier fields, such as those within the scope of the Department of Excellence project, and for developing the innovative experimental strategies necessary for future discoveries. To meet these evolving demands, the department is establishing a new infrastructure (Integrated Computing Laboratory, or Centro Integrato di Calcolo) from the ground up, creating a dedicated facility for advanced computation and research, as well as the renovation of the didactic laboratory dedicated to computing.
The new HPC facility is currently equipped with two dual-socket AMD Epyc servers and two single-socket Epyc servers featuring NVIDIA L40S GPUs. The setup will be finalized with the upcoming acquisition of a high-speed network switch, storage and backup systems, a dedicated login node, and additional computing nodes in late 2026. All hardware will be installed in a newly commissioned HPC room designed to support these high-performance operations.
In parallel, the department is undertaking structural interventions for the didactic laboratory, scheduled for the summer/end of 2026, to modernize the student learning experience. This renovation includes the installation of new furniture, including 100 chairs and 41 specialized desks for integrated cable management, and a complete technical overhaul featuring new PCs, up-to-date peripherals, and 80 certified network outlets.
