Lectures of “Enrico Fermi”  Chair in Academic year 2017-2018 will be held by Prof. Francesco Sette, General Director of European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble (France).

From 18 December all Lectures will be held in Aula Conversi from 16.00 to 18.00

Synopsis of the 15 Lectures

  • The first three Lectures (X rays - History, sources and applications I, II and III, 4 and 18 December 2017 and 22 January 2018) will be directed to a non-specialist audience. X rays of the electromagnetic field will be discussed, in particular their discovery, their observation in Nature, and their application in everyday life. laboratory sources, discoveries, Noble prizes and techniques related to X rays will be discussed. Then, synchrotron light will be introduced. We will begin from the first particle accelerators and from the observation of synchrotron light in high energy physics and in Nature. Then, its properties and its application as light source will be introduced. Finally, we will present different examples of application of synchrotron light in several research fields at the Eurpean Synchrotron Research Facility in Grenoble.
  • The fourth, fifth and sixth Lectures (Interaction Matter – X rays I, II and III, 12 February, 12 March and 9 April 2018) will be dedicated to introduce in a semi-analitic way the origin of electron-radiation coupling. In particular, we will present the different mechanisms of electromagnetic field coupling with charge, spin and momentum of electrons. From these mechanisms it is possible to describe the different scattering and absorption processes in materials. By studying such phenomena it is possible to recontruct the electroic structural properties of the investigated materials.
  • The seventh and eighth Lectures (X rays from synchrtron light sources and free electron lasers, 6 Aprile and 7 May) will be dedicated to discuss the operation mechanisms of synchrotron light sources and XFELs.
  • The final part of the eighth Lecture (Discussion, 7 May) will conclude the first half of the course, and will be dedicated to an overview of all the topics presented in the previous Lectures in an interactive way. Finally, the second half of the course will be introduced. The main topics will be the adoption of synchrtron light in the analysis of several scientific tasks such as materials science, biology, medicine, matter in extreme thermodynamic conditions, cultural heritage.
  • The ninth, tenth and eleventh Lectures (Material sciences I, II and III, 17 September, 8 and 15 October) will discuss the application of synchrotron light in Materials Science.
  • The twelveth Lecture (19 November) will be dedicated to discuss the adoption of synchrotron light for the analysis of matter in extreme conditions (pressure, temperature, etc.).
  • The thirteenth Lecture (Tuesday 11 December) will be dedicated to describe the application of synchrtron light in biology and medicine.
  • The fourteenth Lectures (Wednesday 12 December) will be dedicated to describe the application of synchrotron light in the analysis and characterization of artifacts and natural treasures.
  • The fifteenth and last Lectures (Future opportunities of research on materials and living matter with X rays produced by large research infrastructures, 17 december) will be dedicated to a summary of all the topics covered throughout the course. Furthermore, we will provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in research with synchrtron light performed in existingf or under construction worldwide laboratories. Finally, we will resume the most relevant research fields that exploit these laboratory infrastructures.
