Research Areas
In our department there is an intense research activity in all the major areas of Modern Physics, both fundamental and applied: Particle Physics, Physics of Matter, Astrophysics and Cosmology, Theoretical Physics, Mathematical Physics and Statistics, Electronics Cybernetics and Informatics, Biophysics, Medical Physics, Geophysics, Environmental Physics, Physics and Cultural Heritage, History of Physics, Education in Physics. research sector
The various research areas differ in the experimental facilities and the computational tools employed, as well as in the impact of their application but they share common methods of investigation and an identical approach in solving problems, which often leads rather distant areas to converge in addressing fundamental issues. Astrophysics and Particle Physics, for example, have given rise to Astroparticle Physics whose aim is to decipher signals from remote areas of the Universe and to study the very origin of the Universe itself. Another example is given by the theories and methods developed in statistical mechanics which have proved successful in modelling the functioning of complex biological systems.
The research activity consists both in the construction of complex experimental devices operating in the Department or in the major research laboratories in the world, and in publishing scientific reports, about 600 per year, in the most prestigious international journals.
The Department hosts research facilities of the major Italian institutions such as the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), the Italian Space Agency ( ASI), the ICRA. Appoximately 300 researchers are active in our department, one of the largest of the University, including the professors at the Sapienza University. Teaching and research would not be possible without the essential contribution of the technical and administrative staff of the Department, which employes approximately 70 people.
