1. What are the basic requirements needed to apply for a graduate studies program?
For entering a graduate studies program at the Sapienza University of Rome, you need to have obtained a "Laurea Specialistica" and/or "Laurea Magistrale" or an equivalent title by the 31st of October of that same year you want to subscribe to the graduate studies. In case the candidate is not yet in possession of such a title at the time of the admission examination, he/she will be conditionally admitted to participate in it.

2. What are the basic requirements needed for a foreign student to enter the graduate studies program?
For entering our program you need the equivalent of a "Laurea Specialistica". In other words, you basically need five (or four under some conditions) years of study at college/university, during which you elaborated a Thesis of an advanced research level (it does not necessarily need to be original research, but it should be of an advanced level (a 100 page Thesis). This is basically a master level in the USA or in France. Upon application for the graduate studies, an internal board will judge whether the university studies completed at a non-Italian university can considered to be equivalent to the Italian “Laurea Specialistica”.

The graduate studies last for three years and may be extended to a fourth year (during which an eventual University scholarship is not extended), subject to approval by the graduate school authorities. At the end of the first and second year of attendance, students are evaluated by the relevant Teaching Board before they are admitted to the next year.

5. What kind of scholarships are available for graduate students and how do you obtain them?
In general, the scholarships available for a specific graduate studies program are assigned to the most successful candidates participating in the corresponding admission examination.
Additionally, it is possible that a research group directly assigns you a scholarship if they wish to do so.
Finally, foreigners who performed their undergraduate studies abroad may participate in the general "Call for Applications to fellowships and admission of Foreign Nationals Educated Abroad" which forsees scholarships that are better than the general ones that can be obtained by participating in the general admission examination. More information about this scholarship and how and when to apply for it, can be found at the following site:
http://www.uniroma1.it/studenti/laureati/dottorati/default.php
Note that in general there are few openings each year for these scholarships.

8. How can a foreign student apply for the graduate studies program at La Sapienza?
If you are not Italian you have three ways to enter the graduate studies program.
1.By passing the general admission examination. The Call for application is usually during the month of July. In case you pass it and you do well enough to be listed among the best 12 participants winners, you will receive a fellowship.
2. Foreigners that are not interested in a fellowship, or are supported financially by either a research group of La Sapienza, or a third source (the fellowship would need to cover your salary and university taxes), can enter the program on the basis of their resume only, if an internal research group at La Spaienza wants to work with them.
3. The Sapienza University organizes an open call only for foreigners, with a better scholarship than the one foreseen for Italians. The requirements needed to apply for this scholarship are more stringent. More information about this scholarship and how and when to apply for it, can be found at the following site:
http://www.uniroma1.it/studenti/laureati/dottorati/default.php
